Lemons
Pumice stones can smooth down leathery calluses on your feet. But lemons do the trick more gently. The citric acid softens rough patches of skin without damaging underlying skin. Rub a lemon half into your heels, as if you're juicing it. Or soak feet for 15 minutes in a bowl filled with warm water and 1 cup of fresh lemon juice.
Chamomile
Chamomile has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb. The flower, found in my favorite Mustela product, soothes irritated skin and decreases inflammation. Whenever I wake up with puffy eyes, I head straight to the fridge for chamomile teabag compresses. After steeping pre-bedtime tea, I store the teabags in a Zploc inside the fridge. Lay down, press a tea bag under each eye and listen to the news for 10 minutes. Voila.
We use chamomile-based Mustela Soothing Comfort Balm to cure diaper rash in my house. The boys walk around asking for "My Stella! My Stella!" I can't imagine what would happen if I tried to tea bags on their tushies!
Baking Soda
Every night before bed, my grandmother would cover her face in cold cream, then wet her toothbrush and dip the bristles into a crystal bowl of baking soda. She scrubbed each tooth to whiten and brighten her smile. Baking soda
breaks down surface stains on tooth enamel I use baking soda on pimples, because benzoyl peroxide is too irritating. It removes excess oil from skin and is a slight antispectic. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water. Massabge the paste into the blemish and leave it on for five minutes.
Eggs
Most of the time, I cook them over easy. But raw eggs are great for damaged hair. The yolk fats and proteins produce rich shine, while the whites help remove product buildup. Whisk three eggs in a bowl and comb them through wet hair. Rinse out with cold water after 15 minutes. Avoid hot water, which will partially cook the eggs. Washing out scramble ain't easy!
Milk
I remember my first sunburn like yesterday. My family went to Mexico, and I baked for hours on the beach without sunscreen. #shame I thought I'd get a deeper tan, but I wound up with a painful red burn and spent the rest of the trip indoors covered in milk-soaked hotel towels. The fats and proteins in whole milk soothe irritation. Lesson learned.
