Why You Should Be Nicer to Your Eyelashes

Your Lashes As You Age

If you’ve felt like your lashes aren’t as full as they once were, you might not be wrong. We’re born with a set number of hair follicles and that number doesn’t change as we age. What does change is the growth cycle. Just like the hair on your head, your lashes go through three stages: the growth phase, the transition phase, and the resting phase. The whole cycle can take six months or more. But as we age, this cycle starts to slow down and it’s very possible that some eyelash follicles will stop producing new ones altogether.

How You’re Speeding Up the Process

While there’s little you can do to slow down the aging process, there are plenty of ways to speed up the eyelash thinning associated with it. If you rub your eyes constantly, you will eventually irritate the follicle. Even if you’re not an eye-rubber, your cleansing and makeup-removing practices

could be at fault. Many of us don’t pay attention to the pressure we apply when we’re removing makeup, but repeated wear and tear can push lashes towards permanently falling out. Sleeping in mascara is another big no-no because it dries out your lashes, making them brittle. Waterproof mascara is the most drying of all, and also requires more scrubbing action to remove. If you can’t ditch it, at least apply a lash-fortifying primer first.
